Depot Park
Gainesville’s Depot Park is a 172-acre urban oasis tucked between the University of Florida and downtown. The park is centrally located and easily accessible, and it boasts an array of amenities including biking, walking, jogging trails, a dog park, skate park, and restaurants.
Drive through the Gainesville neighborhood of Depot Park, and it feels like any other residential community. But it’s teeming with history. You’ll pass the oldest house in Gainesville, built in 1862. As the city grew, so did Depot Park, which now comprises 9.5 square miles and is home to more than 40,000 residents.
Gainesville’s Depot Park has big plans for the future, including construction on a new 40,000-square-foot park shelter and public restroom, and upgrades to existing playground equipment. In the meantime, the park offers plenty of fun things to do for the whole family.
The Depot Park was originally a train station built in 1884 for the City of Gainesville. It served as a major tourist attraction for Gainesville and the surrounding area. The original depot burned down in 1901, and a new depot was built on the same site. This depot no longer serves as a train station, but it’s now a venue for community concerts, comedy shows, and many other events.
Gainesville is home to one of the largest public parks in Florida: Depot Park. The 5.52 acre park is open to the public and features a variety of recreational activities. It’s a great place for hikers and bikers, and it’s an especially great place to take young children, since it has a playground and a splash pad. The Depot Park’s 47 acres are ideal for those who plan a picnic, bike ride or run. There are walking and biking paths, a soccer field, tennis courts, a swimming pool and more. The Depot Park’s main attraction is the train depot, opened in 1899. The Depot Park is open to the public daily, from sunrise to sunset.
